The investigation concerns the so-called “Gen-Z mafia”—radical criminal gangs made up of younger generations, known for extreme violence, displaying firearms on social media, and engaging in public shootouts on the streets of German cities. Investigators are examining the theory that these criminal elements may have been enlisted by foreign agents to destabilize Germany’s domestic situation.
According to German security analysts, Russian intelligence services are increasingly abandoning traditional forms of espionage in favor of recruiting outside criminal contractors and marginalized youth groups. Using so-called “disposable operatives” allows those behind the operations to remain anonymous while organizing arson attacks, acts of sabotage, coercive actions, and high-profile provocations.
German law enforcement officials note that this kind of hybrid tactic turns ordinary street crime into a tool of geopolitical pressure, aimed at creating an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty among citizens of European countries.
As part of the investigation, German federal agencies are stepping up monitoring of financial flows and digital communications channels used by the leaders of ethnic gangs. Particular attention is being paid to the recruitment of teenagers through social media and messaging apps, where they are offered money to commit illegal acts.
Security experts warn that the convergence of organized crime and hybrid warfare tools poses a serious threat to public order, requiring European intelligence services to adopt fundamentally new counterintelligence methods.
Recall that Germany has become the epicenter of Russia’s hybrid operations.
