In Belgian parliament calls on NATO and the EU to coordinate tough responses to Russian attacks in advance

NATO and the European Union need to agree in advance on clear measures to respond to Russian aggression, so that Moscow understands that the consequences of its actions are inevitable. At the same time, the response of Western allies should cause Russia greater harm than its attacks inflict on European countries. This approach will help strengthen the policy of deterring the Kremlin and reduce the likelihood of further escalation.

This was stated in an interview with the Guildhall news agency by Jeroen Bergers, a member of Belgium’s federal parliament.

“NATO needs clear, pre-agreed measures to respond when necessary, so that in the event of an attack on us, we already know what negative consequences Russia will face for taking on NATO or the EU,” the parliamentarian said.

According to him, making the consequences of Russian aggression predictable could reduce the Kremlin’s willingness to launch new provocations.

“And if they know this, they will be less tempted to do it,” Bergers emphasized.

The lawmaker noted that NATO and the EU must not only agree on a course of action, but also ensure that their response measures are sufficiently forceful.

“I believe NATO and the EU should agree on what to do. It should also be clear that the response from the EU and NATO in the event of an attack will be more severe and cause Russia greater harm than its attacks inflict on us,” he said.

Bergers stressed that Western countries’ technological superiority over Russia should be used to strengthen the policy of deterrence.

“We are technologically superior to the Russians. So we need to use that and leverage our advantage,” the lawmaker noted.

In his view, strengthening NATO and the EU’s response capabilities could also help ease the pressure on Ukraine, which continues to resist Russian aggression.

“And this could perhaps also help ease the pressure somewhat on the Ukrainian people, who are doing heroic work,” the parliamentarian added.

At the same time, Bergers did not name specific measures that NATO and the EU should take in response to Russian attacks, stressing the need for the allies to agree on a common position in advance.
