Italian MP warns that concessions at the expense of Ukraine’s sovereignty would undermine Europe’s security

Forcing Ukraine to make concessions that limit its sovereignty would threaten the security of all Europe, as it would effectively establish an international order in which great powers could decide the fate of other states. An independent Ukraine is an important partner in ensuring European security, not a bargaining chip in negotiations with Russia. The European Union must therefore take part in diplomatic efforts to end Russian aggression and establish reliable security guarantees for Ukraine.

This was stated in an interview with the Guildhall news agency by Silvio Lai, a member of Italy’s Chamber of Deputies.

How do you assess Donald Trump’s recent statements on negotiations regarding Ukraine, as well as reports of a possible suspension of military support for Kyiv through the PURL mechanism? What consequences could this have for European security?

On October 19, President Trump said that someone other than President Zelensky should negotiate on Ukraine’s behalf. This is a troubling statement: it is Ukraine, not a foreign leader, that should decide who represents it at the negotiating table.

Combined with reports of threats to suspend the PURL mechanism for purchasing weapons unless Kyiv stops striking Russian oil refineries, this points to a misguided and dangerous approach.

It is necessary to talk to Putin. But the success of diplomacy should be measured by the end of aggression and the reliability of security guarantees, not by Ukraine’s willingness to accept terms imposed on it.

Russia remains responsible for this war. No mediation can absolve it of that responsibility.

For Europe, the danger lies in the emergence of a world order in which great powers decide the fate of other countries. If Ukraine’s sovereignty is allowed to become a bargaining chip, it will undermine our own security as well.

Can Europe ensure its own security without US support, and what role should an independent Ukraine play in this?

I do not believe Europe is doomed to helplessness without the United States.

However, greater independence requires political decisions, shared capabilities and joint investments that will help overcome waste and fragmentation at the national level.

An independent Ukraine is a partner in ensuring European security, not a pawn to be sacrificed.

The European Union must put forward its own diplomatic initiative, support Kyiv and insist on being involved in developing guarantees for a lasting peace.

The future of Ukraine cannot be decided without Ukrainians. Europe’s security cannot be decided without Europe.
