Latvia’s armed forces issue warning of an aerial threat in border areas

The National Armed Forces of Latvia have officially announced that a possible air threat has been detected in the country’s sovereign airspace over its eastern border regions. The military’s official statement was published on the social network X and concerns the situation in the Krāslava and Rēzekne municipalities, which border Russia and Belarus. The Latvian Army Command urged local residents to remain calm and emphasized that, at this stage, no additional emergency measures or evacuation are required.

The military’s statement says that the air situation is being monitored continuously using radar surveillance assets and air defense units on duty. If the situation escalates further or the presence of hazardous objects is confirmed, the army will promptly notify the public through the mobile emergency alert system.

It is noted that Latvia’s border regions have repeatedly come under heightened scrutiny in the past due to incidents involving unidentified drones entering the country and violations of its airspace.

NATO forces participating in the air policing mission over the Baltic states have also been placed on heightened alert to intercept possible targets. Latvian defense agencies continue to closely monitor developments in the border skies to minimize risks to civilian infrastructure and residents of the eastern municipalities.

Recall that Latvia deployed air defenses against drones on its border with Russia.
