Emergency measures to deploy army patrols in cities were introduced amid escalating social and political tensions, a wave of protests, recent unrest in Milan, and growing risks of hybrid threats and sabotage targeting critical infrastructure.
Italian army personnel, working alongside Carabinieri and national police patrols, have stepped up security at government buildings, diplomatic missions, central train stations, and tourist areas in Rome, Milan, and other major cities.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government is taking these steps to counter attempts to destabilize the country, which have escalated into violent street clashes with radical groups. Authorities are investigating possible signs of foreign intelligence services’ involvement in organizing mass unrest aimed at undermining Italy’s domestic stability.
The decision to deploy army units on the streets has drawn mixed reactions from the public and opposition parties, who criticize the authorities for militarizing urban spaces. Nevertheless, the government insists that strict security measures are necessary to prevent chaos amid heightened geopolitical risks in Europe. Security forces have been placed on high alert, and additional checkpoints have been set up at the entrances to the largest cities to inspect suspicious vehicles.
In related news, anti-government protests in Italy have escalated into unrest.
