Germany uncovers spy who passed secrets of armored vehicle production to Russia

Germany’s Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office, together with the security services, arrested 53-year-old Ukrainian citizen Vadim Ya., a native of the Luhansk region, in the city of Eisenhüttenstadt (Brandenburg) on suspicion of carrying out intelligence activities on behalf of Russian military intelligence (the GRU). According to investigators, the suspect lived in Germany and maintained regular contact with representatives of Russian intelligence services through an intermediary, passing on sensitive information related to the military and defense industries.

According to the investigation, the suspect gathered detailed information about the technological processes involved in manufacturing armored vehicles, ammunition, and explosives at German facilities.

Vadim Ya. was also interested in troop deployments, infrastructure, and military facilities on NATO’s eastern flank. According to Der Spiegel, the agent had a particular interest in the Bundeswehr’s 45th Armored Brigade, known as the Lithuania Brigade, which is stationed there to reinforce the Baltic region.

The arrest was carried out by special forces, after which the suspect’s residence was searched and digital storage devices and communication equipment were seized.

The Federal Court in Karlsruhe has since ordered the suspect to be held in pretrial detention. German law enforcement agencies are continuing their investigation to establish the full chain of the agent’s contacts and the extent of the information passed on to the Kremlin.

As a reminder, Germany is radically restructuring its intelligence services to combat Russian espionage.
