The statement came in the wake of the recent high-profile arrest in Brandenburg of a suspect accused of espionage and collaborating with Russia’s military intelligence agency, the GRU. According to the head of the German government, Germany has objectively become the Kremlin’s main target in Europe because of its consistent and extensive support for Ukraine, its supply of heavy weapons, and its hosting of critical NATO logistics hubs.

According to documents from the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, the arrested 53-year-old Ukrainian citizen, Vadym Ya., collected detailed intelligence on the production technologies for armored vehicles, ammunition, and explosives at German defense companies. He also showed heightened interest in personnel, infrastructure, and military facilities on the eastern flank of the North Atlantic Alliance. In particular, the agent took a targeted interest in the activities of the Bundeswehr’s 45th Armored Brigade, known as the Lithuania Brigade. Investigators note that, unlike primitive “disposable agents,” the accused carried out complex, long-term tasks to recruit people and seek out insiders within the military-industrial complex.

The head of Germany’s foreign intelligence service (BND) had also previously stated that Germany was under unprecedented pressure from Russian intelligence services. Friedrich Merz stressed that the country’s authorities should harbor no illusions: in the coming years, the frequency of such incidents and attempted sabotage at critical infrastructure facilities will only increase, requiring a firm response.

Recall that a spy who passed secrets about armored vehicle production to Russia was exposed in Germany.
