Latvia is fighting Russian propaganda on the international stage

Latvia’s main task as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council remains firmly countering Russian disinformation and neutralizing Kremlin narratives on the international stage, said Latvia’s Ambassador to the UN, Sanita Pavļuta-Deslandes. Source: LSM
She said that although the Security Council cannot physically stop hostilities, diplomatic pressure and the constant rebuttal of Russian propaganda are producing tangible results, shifting the positions of neutral states and strengthening international support for Ukraine.
Latvian diplomats are actively using the UN platform to keep Ukraine at the forefront of the international community’s attention and are calling emergency meetings on the situation in the region. The ambassador emphasized that sustained cooperation with Security Council colleagues helps build a clearer understanding of what is happening. A striking example was the united position of 14 member states calling for a ceasefire.
Latvia is also taking part in the process of selecting a new UN Secretary-General, whose term of office is due to end soon, advocating for the appointment of a leader who will strictly uphold the organization’s Charter and the principles of international law.
Diplomats note that its status as a non-permanent Security Council member gives Latvia a historic opportunity to directly influence global decision-making and exert sustained pressure on the Russian Federation. In Latvia’s view, maintaining a robust debate and publicly exposing false statements by the Russian delegation demonstrate to the Kremlin that the international community’s position is unwavering. With the veto blocking direct resolutions, a sustained diplomatic presence and fact-based work remain the key tools for deterring the aggressor at the UN.
Recall that a Russian blogger was deported from Latvia for promoting war.
