The US refusal to support Ukraine and Kyiv’s territorial concessions threaten Europe’s security — French senator

The possibility that the United States may abandon its support for Ukraine, the European Union and NATO, and agree to the annexation of part of Ukrainian territory, poses serious threats to European security. Territorial concessions by Kyiv would be a defeat for Europe and international law and could lead to a resurgence of nationalist territorial claims on the continent.
This was stated in an interview with the Guildhall news agency by French Senator Pierre Ouzoulias, who represents the Hauts-de-Seine department.
— According to the Financial Times, Washington may suspend the PURL mechanism, which allows U.S. weapons to be purchased for Ukraine, unless Kyiv stops striking Russian oil refineries. Such a decision could be part of a broader U.S. retreat from its commitments to support Ukraine and ensure European security. How do you assess this U.S. policy, and what threats does it pose to Europe’s security?
— Today’s allies may become tomorrow’s adversaries.
The United States’ recent positions confirm the analysis that President Donald Trump’s decisions are driven by his personal financial interests or those of companies owned by his supporters.
In the Trump era, the right of peoples to self-determination, the inviolability of internationally recognized borders and international law have no value whatsoever. Relations between states are governed by the principle of deal-making.
There is no doubt that the United States will abandon Ukraine, the European Union and NATO to serve the personal interests of its leaders and voters.
I would add that many far-right political parties in Europe share this rhetoric, which places force above the law.
In Germany, for example, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party advocates both the right to annex “lost territories” such as Alsace-Moselle, Luxembourg, Austria and others, and an end to support for Ukraine to satisfy Putin’s demands—a leader with whom it feels a strong affinity.
We should fear not only the Trump administration, but also the rise to power of parties that share its ideology.
— If U.S. support ends and Ukraine is forced to make concessions that violate its sovereignty, will European countries be able to resist Russian aggression without Ukraine as an independent military partner, especially given the further reduction in U.S. commitments?
— Defending Ukraine’s borders is a moral duty.
Agreeing to the annexation of part of its territory would be a defeat for Europe and for international law.
Europe’s current borders were established after the catastrophe of the Second World War. Accepting their violation would revive the nationalist territorial claims that led to that war.
